Film: Taken 2

I am not going to lie. I haven't been this excited in a long time. Liam Neeson is back and is being hunted down by the family that he absolutely annihilated in Taken. Get ready for more of the skills we saw that could arguably take down Jason Bourne and James Bond put together. This looks incredible.

Harvard Sq AMC Loews Cinema Closing!

Shock horror! The cinema in the middle of Harvard will closing meaning that the nearest cinema will now be a subway ride away! Very sad. The last film I watched there was Marvel's awesome Avengers so I cannot be too unhappy. On the lookout for another cinema you can sneak beer into - any suggestions welcome.

Here is what The Crimson has to say (with a few comments specifically on the history of the cinema).

FILM: Frat House

One of Todd Phillip's first movies. This documentary gives a detailed account of what it was like to pledge frats in the dark days of the 90's. Truly interesting, truly terrifying and at the same time...somewhat amazing.

Todd Phillip's directed and produced The Hangover, Road Trip, Project X, Old School and Starsky and Hutch. He's a bankable comedy genius. Enjoy.

MUSIC: Alex Clare - Too Close

Great song and a cool video. A more positive note to leave you with after my scathing Cosmopolis review.

FILM REVIEW: Cosmopolis

The basis for the film sounds promising. It's about a 28 year old billionaire and how everything goes wrong for him over the course of a day as he travels in his limo to get his haircut on the other side of town.

Even the promise that Pattinson has sex multiple times should be a draw for many viewers such as teenage girls (or maybe just all girls).

Despite this, the acting is terrible. This is a product of the dialogue which is simply awful and which will have you questioning what was going on in the writer's mind as the screenplay was drawn up and the directing which is amateur. A surprise seeing as Cronenberg is at the helm. Unfortunately for the actors, this disastrous combination makes them look just as bad...it looks like Pattinson will have to step aside as a sexual symbol for a number of years to come.

I've never been to a cinema and seen droves of people leave halfway through, yet this is what happened with this movie. I waited outside the screen to see what people were saying as they left and the one word I kept hearing was 'terrible'. The one phrase I kept hearing was 'what the fuck was that?'

Proceed with caution with this one...you've been warned 3/10.

Documentary: Jiro Dreams of Sushi

This isn't the kind of thing one would suspect me to post on here but I haven't posted in a while so thought I'd start with a weird one. In the last few weeks I have really had nothing to do except watch films and read books (like the back to back to back Bourne marathon I did a couple days ago... Looking forward to the NEW Bourne film: The Bourne Legacy).

Documentaries are something that I am really getting into (especially now Man on Wire is now placed at the top of Rotten Tomatoes' greatest films) and 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' is one I haven't yet watched but I think looks fascinating. Below is the trailer. It has great reviews so I recommend people check it out - I certainly am going to.

I am going to be taking a documentary course at the London Film Academy this Summer which I am really excited about.

MUSIC: Calvin Harris feat. Example - We'll Be Coming Back

Who'd ever thought we'd see the day when one of my favorite artists and Caspar's favorite artist would combine!? Great find Gabrielle.

FILM: Prometheus

Prometheus, the new prequel to Alien directed by Ridley Scott, is a dazzling visual spectacle. The story revolves around a team of scientists who venture to an alien world with the hope that they will discover some clues about the origins of humanity. In typical blockbuster style everything doesn't go to plan.

The film's visual effects from start to finish are stunning. You'll immediately be sucked into the sci-fi world that Ridley Scott creates and believe that the technology showcased would fit the timeframe of the 2090's. Unfortunately, much like Avatar, it's the visual effects alone that make the film worth watching.

The movie's main premise could have been interesting (human origins), but the story disappoints and thus the idea falters. Put simply, you won't care about any of the characters. What's more, for an Alien prequel, the film does not keep true to the sci-fi horror genre with only one scene that's truly grueling.

Worth a watch for the amazing visuals, but simply another empty blockbuster. 6.5/10

FIlM: The Dictator

The Dictator is the next installment in Sasha Baron Cohen's set of hilarious comedies. Unlike Borat and Bruno, the entire movie is scripted and thus the result is a film that shares a lot of similarities with Ali G Indahouse. It is a movie that doesn't go far too far like Bruno, but one that still revels in a slew of outrageous jokes based on racial stereotypes. Despite racial jokes being wrong, the packed audience in the cinema was laughing out loud throughout the movie, a testament to Cohen's comedy genius. The film ends with a moral message that works as an attempt by Cohen to protect himself from too much (real-life) hate once the film is over and done with, but this works as a welcome change from his previous entries.

To sum up: Outrageous, hilarious and worth watching.

7.5/10

FILM: MAN ON WIRE

The pacing of the film is done perfectly, with the result that James Marsh creates a documentary full of suspense and thrills. The tension, like that of the wire itself, builds and at points becomes unbearable. This is despite the fact that we know the outcome! The combination, of old grainy footage from the 70s, which makes us feel as though we are there, and majestic live action shots that leave us in awe at their beauty, is transcendent. I also particularly enjoyed Marsh's use of split screen as I made a video recently exploring this technique.

FILM: APRICOT

I saw this on the plane on the way back from Dubai and thought it was really touching. After it finishes, the movie leaves a smile on your face because you know you've seen something good. There aren't many films out there like it! A great film for all you dreamers out there who believe in fate and love. Only 10mins too.

Film: PICK ONE

A short film I made in our animation class, which uses split screens and multiple sounds, to force the viewer to choose what they want to listen to and watch.

The Campaign

Two comic legends combined. The trailer doesn't look particularly funny, but hopefully the combined genius of Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis makes up for this.

Film: The Ride of the Premier League

This is a short animation I made in the last week with the help of some voices from my friends. It draws from a number of films (Apocalypse Now, Braveheart, Lord of the Rings...) leading people to assume the characters are going to fight.

Music: Only the Horses and another Gotye cover

Two awesome songs I just couldn't not post. Both (Usher and Scissor Sisters) are people I remember listening to years ago and both have come out with these puppies (with the help of Calvin Harris and Vula - who also sings for Basement Jaxx). Enjoy!

Film: Ted

This is gold. Seth MacFarlane's first feature and it looks insane. Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg both star in it as well as a pot-smoking, checkout-humping teddy bear. This made my day.

Music: Birdy - Skinny Love

A song that only just seem to be picking up across the pond (apologies to anyone who heard this last year). It seems very popular at the moment and I just thought I'd bring it to a little more light for those who haven't yet heard it already. She is very English and has a great voice. I'm not going to lie, I prefer it by Bon Iver, but this is something different and we all like something different once in a while. The Das Kapital Rerub is also very cool (below Birdy version).

Bon Iver - Skinny Love (Das Kapital Rerub) [DL LINK IN COMMENTS] by Das Kapital

Also check out THIS, it is her version of The XX's 'Shelter'!

Music: Gil Scott-Heron And Jamie xx - I'll Take Care of You

A great song for whatever mood you are in. I'm putting this up specifically for the person who showed it to me as they are going through a very hard time right now (puss!). Just close your eyes and enjoy this song (and let's all crack a smile at 2.34 when the song picks up again).

Music: Gotye - Eyes Wide Open

While being older than the popular "Somebody That I Used to Know," Eyes Wide Open is a really great song. Wouter De Backer ('Gotye') has a really easy voice to listen to and he likes to make some funky animations for music vids. Not sure how this one really relates to the song but it's cool nonetheless!

Music: Calvin Harris feat. Ne-Yo - Let's Go

New Calvin Harris. Really like the song, kind of "pop"y but still a good listen.

However, I really miss Calvin Harris' singing. Here's what he said back in 2010 after singing on his first two studio albums, I Created Disco and Ready for the Weekend:

"I've stopped the live shows. I'm going to focus more on production and DJing and zero per cent of my time will go on singing.

I'll do tracks with people who can sing well - proper artists, proper performers. I can focus on what I'm much better at, which is making music. I'm just not cut out for that role.

I kind of fell into it a few years ago - the live show had to happen, I had to be the frontman because I was doing the vocals on the songs. It went all right. I spent a few years trying to get it really properly good, but it dawned on me it wasn't going to get much better. I've taken the singing thing as far as I can."

Calvin my friend, you are not "not cut out for that role"!

Below is 'Ready for the Weekend' sung by the awesome Scottish artist. Despite it being the end of the weekend, enjoy!

Film: Mishmash Film Comp.

Here is a very simple video. Would have taken one day to shoot, a bit of editing and then voice over of a poem, but the effect is great. I am on campus with rowing training over the whole of spring break so will be free to have a little fun with my camera. If anyone has any ideas for short films (poems, music vids, etc.) just whack me an email. I'd love to hear any ideas.

Also check out the other entries for the competition, there are some very cool ideas. This is also great: http://mishmash.gettyimages.com/en/entries/HTCM44

Music: Pentatonix Cover of Gotye

Here is an awesome cover of Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used To Know'. The vocals are great, the video is pretty drastic but hey, just focus on the music not the lame camera shots. Enjoy.

Music: Hardwell in Boston

So this morning I have to wake up the hungover, blurry-eyed Max from his deep slumber. On the way down to a spot of morning rowing he recollects his memories from last night. He tells me he went to Splash (one of Boston's nicer clubs) after dinner with friends.

"The music was great" he recalls.

No shit Sherlock. Hardwell (#24 DJ in the world according to DJmag) was in Boston last night and playing at Splash. In his inebriated state he couldn't work out why it was so expensive to get in... and why the music was so damn good! Anyway, here is "Zero 76" - Enjoy it as much as Max did last night when he was dancing on the table in Splash!

Music: Bon Iver at AIR Studios (4AD/Jagjaguwar Session)

Such great music. Just what you need to watch on a Monday morning. It has put me in such a good mood in the last 20 minutes. You don't need to watch the whole video, but I suggest you watch a little to really get a sense of the organic nature it was created. Then put it on in the back ground while you sort out your schedule for the day/ tidy your room (or whatever else you do on Monday morning) and you will walk around with a smile on your face for the rest of the day.

Thanks to Jamie L-S for this find.

If you're looking for more of a spring in your step for the day check out the video below of Parov Stelar's Catgroove below. It's been playing in my room all week.

Music: Drive

One of the many reasons for which I enjoyed Drive so much was because of its soundtrack. It has a chill neo-80s feel to it. Perfect on Sunday after a hard week of raging.

Great little video too.

There are a lot of these floating around the internet, but this is probably the most chill one I've seen. Great just before the weekend...the calm before the storm.

Film: Brian Taylor to Write/Direct 'Twisted Metal'

Just saw this article and was pretty shocked. Brian Taylor, co-directed Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is being paid a heck of a lot of dough to write/direct a film. Is it just me or is the CO-director of a mediocre sequel film (to a terrible first film, Ghost Rider, with only 5.2/10 on IMDB) being offered a 7-figure deal to write and direct Twisted Metal. Maybe the Ghost Rider films are just not my cup of tea (because dare I say it I do actually like Nicholas Cage a lot!) but I do not understand how he is being offered so much money to split from Mark Neveldine for the first time(which he has co-directed all his films with - such as Jason Statham's Crank) and adapt a video game into a film. Congrats to the guy though, he's clearly moving up in the world. Not sure whether I'm going to congratulate the guys at Sony that are paying him to make another 5/10 rated film.

The Bourne Legacy

Looks like there's a new Bourne movie coming out soon...without Matt Damon. I'd be a little skeptical if it wasn't for the fact that Jeremy Renner is the new main star. He's the badass from the Hurt Locker if you didn't know.

Music: Upular

A sweet little song, with music video, made entirely from chords, bass notes and vocal samples from Disney's film Up.

Sent to me by the one and only Jack Carr. It should put you in a splendid mood for the weekend (regardless of whether you are a Disney-lover or not)!

Music Video: Jay-Z & Kanye West - Ni***s in Paris

WOW. Whoever did the effects on this video really had their sh*t together. This video came out today and is sensational. It starts with the warning message: "This video has been identified by epilepsy action to potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised." Anything that starts with a message like that is going to either be super crappy or bloody awesome. And this is the latter. There is a lot of mirror effects used (just like that in Photobooth) which switches back to normal without even a glimmer of disruption in the continuity. One day the eager bloggers of Jopfared will be able to edit like this. Trust.

Rap is really not my thing but these two... hats off to them... they are two incredibly talented guys.

Turn it onto 720p and crank the volume. It's worth it.

And seriously, if you do have epilepsy, don't watch it!

And here's a cheeky remix for y'all.

Trailer: Agent Provocateur

It is Valentine's Day in a few days so I thought I'd post this. There are a couple really good POV (point-of-view) shots... *cough*... and I really like the music... *cough* *cough*

Happy Valentine's Day!

Music: M.I.A - Bad Girls

I'm also sitting here...bored whilst I wait for some video to render in the animation studio and stumbled across this video from the same artist who gave us Paper Planes. The song's not bad, but the video is pretty sensationally entertaining. Give it a watch. Plus who doesn't love them bad girls?

Art: Banksy Elephant

Browsing the news at 4AM (as one does) and came across this interesting article. Back in March, it seems British graffiti artist, Banksy, trod his foot in something unintentionally. Have a skim of the article. It is interesting. Good Night!

Very powerful song, with an even better animation to back it up. I don't really know why we haven't posted this one yet.

Film Review: The Grey

Awful. I really want my $10 back please! The trailer would lead you to believe that The Grey is another Liam Neeson action flick ala Taken or Unknown. Albeit this premise sets us up for a mediocre movie anyway, like Mission Impossible, this would have been the 'McDonalds type' blockbuster that I was craving. I wanted to see a bad ass Liam Neeson hunting down, and killing wolves with his bare hands (and the minibar vodka bottles seen in the trailer). What you get is a journey to no where as Neeson and friends try to survive.

The cinematography, is admittedly the saving grace of the movie. There are some wonderful sweeping views and amazingly vivid POV shots. If you're into gore there's plenty of that too. The dialogue is generally fine and there are even a few funny Liam Neeson quotes in this movie. 'If you don't shut up I'll be beating you to a pulp in 5 minutes' and 'Fuck that' come to mind.

SLIGHT SPOILER - Obviously you'll be curious to see the fight scene eluded to in the trailer. I was too, unfortunately the movie cuts to credits just as said fight is about to break out. Unexpected false advertising from a producer as well known as Ridley Scott!

Overall not a great film. Maybe you won't feel so cheated if you've not seen the trailer,. 4/10

Music: Coldplay - Charlie Brown

The video to Coldplay's latest single released today. What do you think? I like the song (like, not love) and think that party looks like it would be a lot of fun. A lot of blue, pink and green in the colour correcting... Overall I think its pretty cool, not something I'd ask my friends if they'd seen though.

Cinemacuteo Film School

For anyone interested in film this is a channel you should be following on Vimeo. It is a channel that offers videos from all over the web that will help in filmmaking. Essentially it is "published videos tutorials to make your film projects, from the special effects, to the steadycam, lights, cranes. Filmmaking demystifies."

Another site I look on a lot is Oliviatech which offers really great hands-on reviews of filmmaking equipment and other stuff.

Short Film: Aqui Jaz a Minha Casa - Here Rests My Home

Definitely watch this in HD and fullscreen. Randomly found this on a digital camera blog and gave it a watch (it was only uploaded to Vimeo a few hours ago though). Some of the shots are really nice and well thought out. The thing that impressed me most was the color correction - turning an amateur short film into something that appears very professional. The storyline is pretty quirky too!

Film : Mission Impossible, Ghost Protocol

The fourth installment in the series of 'impossible missions' which all turn out be possible (big surprise there) has received rave reviews. The reality, however, is that Ghost Protocol simply churns out more of the same. Tom cruise must once again race against time in order to save a damsel in distress, this time the stunts are even bigger, the car chases even longer and the locations more numerous.

Interestingly all the stunts are actually performed by Tom Cruise. So when you see the action hero leaping from the tallest building in the world and running across it.... that's actually Tom Cruise performing those stunts! For me that was the most surprising aspect of the entire movie. Ghost Protocol is a cash churner. The basic plot is exactly the same as all the other mission impossibles. You'll get your fix of Tom Cruise and the added bonus of a few more jokes in this installment, but you won't walk out of the theater feeling as though you've gotten you're money's worth. I like to compare watching Ghost Protocol to a trip to McDonald's. Fun to do, but you feel as though it wasn't really worth it afterwards.

Overrated, but just like McDonald's, definitely worth giving it a try if you're in the mood. 6.5/10

Film / Music: Pulp Fiction Soundtrack

The Pulp Fiction Sountrack is an awesome one. There are many momentous occasions in this strange, multi-genred film... many of which are due to the music. For example, the opening credits, the over-dose scene and the closing scene. So I decided to put together a video on Final Cut Pro to show how this sound changes our perception of either what is happening or what is going to happen next. It is really interesting to watch (well I think it is!), especially because some of the music I used was from films like Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting - also films related to drugs/violence but with a very different feel. Have a look what you think.

Music: Adventure Club

John Randolph Thornton, the Jopfared Roommate, has talked about Adventure Club quite a bit. Being a writer for Dancing Astronaut, he knows his stuff, especially when it comes to chilled dubstep like this. I am a huge fan of these guys and have them mixed in with the likes of M83, Coco Rosie and Gramatik on an iTunes playlist. See what you think.

Film: The Artist

The Artist tells the tale of George Valentin, one of the biggest stars of the silent movie era, and his difficulties adapting to sound movies. French director Michel Hazanavicius' experiment is a masterpiece. He breaks new ground and thus follows in the footsteps of prestigious french directors such as Goddard. By revisiting the silent movie genre he oddly creates a refreshing film that many viewers will enjoy.

It's useful to know a bit of film history before watching this movie. Up until the late 1920s, films were all silent. Live orchestras would have been present in theaters to provide the soundtrack. Silent film stars were hugely influential as audiences wanted to see their favorites on the silver screen. It was one said that MGM 'had more stars than there were in the sky.' That's a bold claim! Eventually technology advanced and sound could be added to film. Many of these stars failed to adapt to sound cinema, because of their accents or because they had to remain static due to how the technology worked (they would have to stand close enough to a microphone which would be hidden on set). George Valentin was one of the biggest stars who failed to smoothly transition to talking pictures.

The acting in The Artist is terrific. The expressions are as over the top and hilarious as one would expect from a silent movie. The chemistry between George Valentin and Peppy Miller dazzles. Valentin's little dog always amuses with his cute tricks. The soundtrack really adds to the tone which the movie tries to convey at any given time. The cinematography is generally standard issue, but there are a few amazing set pieces when the environment is used to convey a blatant meaning. For example, in one scene George Valentin walks by a theatre which states 'The Lonely Star' is showing.

The Artist really moves the audience. I was worried at the beginning when Valentin was introduced as an arrogant braggart, however, by the end of the movie I truly sympathized with his predicament. I've only seen a few movies able to produce this effect...and they both won a host of academy awards.

Honestly, I can say that this is the best film I have ever watched. I don't think I can recommend The Artist more highly...go watch it! 10/10

Music: Miles Fisher - Don't Let Go w/ Phoebe Tonkin

So I don't want to be that guy who just raves about how great any song or music video is - but this is exceptional. Both the song and the video are great, but the video is almost too good for the song... and I'm not saying this in a bad way. I don't mean this song doesn't deserve such an awesome video because I am a huge huge, huge fan of the song, but this video almost draws away too much of the audience's attention. Most videos that I watch, I sit there thinking "oh that's cool but I would have done that part differently," but with this one I was never thinking "oh now they're going to kiss" or "oh now she's going to punch him in the face." The surprise factor (I didn't know she was going to pull out a gun?!), the amazingly beautiful Phoebe Tonkin, and the soft lighting used in the very scenic mountain setting (and then garage and apartment) all combine to create this awesome film directed by Michael Ashton. I just watched his demo reel - this guy is seriously talented. Anyway, I'm waffling now... Check the video out, support Miles Fisher (Harvard Grad and great singer/actor), support Phoebe Tonkin (how could you not?) and support Michael Ashton (Seriously talented director and in Visual Effects).

Film/Music: More GoPro with a Great Song

William Kenworthy, one of Jopfared's biggest fan's, sent me in this video today. Although not strictly a piece of Jopfared material, the video below is very cool indeed. It is one of the more visually pleasing wingsuit videos I have seen and it is accompanied by one of my favourite songs: Awolnation - Sail.

Film: The Grey

Unreal. I can't get enough of Liam Neeson. I'm imagining the pitch for this film.

Writer: Hey, I have an awesome idea for a film.
Producer: Sorry, I'm not making any films at the moment.
Writer: C'monnnn... it'll be really good.
Producer: Ok, if you can pitch something worth me spending money on in 3 seconds I'll hear you out {sniggers}
Writer: EASY!
Producer: Go on then.
Writer: Liam. Neeson. Pack. Of. Wolves.
Producer: When shall we start filming?

Check out the trailer.

Music: Jay-Z and Blue Ivy Carter New Song

So Beyonce finally had the baby and named her Blue Ivy. So, Daddy (Jay-Z) releases a song about it. Despite all the hate I have for all the self-promotion I do like the song for how heartfelt it is. If I was a world-renowned artist, like Jay-Z clearly is, I'm sure this is the sort of song I would write and sing. However, this is not the sort of song I would write, sing and then release... and especially not as a "featuring Blue Ivy Carter." Claiming this as your daughters debut is one of the most gimmicky things they could have done. Anyway, the song aint too bad.

Film Sequel: Wrath of the Titans
